When choosing an energy plan, there are many factors to take into consideration. One of those personal choices that you get to make as a consumer is the type of lighting you will choose for your home. Some types of lighting will save you money and some will cost you greatly!

The reality is, we use lighting in our homes for the large majority of our day. It is important to use the most efficient form of lighting because it will save you money on power bills long term. Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL’s)

CFL’s have been a common choice for many consumers because they are relatively inexpensive and the technology is newer. These types of bulbs have improved over the years, making them very efficient with a high lumen per watt output. However, this type of lighting is not always the most aesthetically pleasing. The light quality from these lights produces a yellow hue that many people do not like. This can be fixed by using different types of CFL’s that produce a different color temperature, though these are typically much more expensive than the standard yellow light bulb.

LED Light Bulbs

This type of lighting has become very popular over the last few years because it is extremely efficient and provides excellent quality white light. LED’s also last much longer than most other types of lighting with an average life span of 50,000 hours, which equates to around 6 years! This is by far the best type of light bulb if you are looking for long-term savings. However, this type of lighting can be expensive when purchased at retail stores because typically they are sold as “light fixtures” rather than just light bulbs. This type of bulb can be purchased online much more cheaply in bulk quantities though!

Halogen Lights

Halogen lights are not typically found in homes, but many vehicle headlights use this type of lighting technology because it emits a very bright white light and is extremely efficient with the amount of power used. However, this type of lighting is much more expensive than the other types mentioned above.

Fluorescent Tube Lighting

This is typically found in commercial buildings like stores and restaurants. Fluorescent tube lights typically do not produce an aesthetically pleasing light because they are extremely bright and emit a white color temperature, meaning their quality is somewhat poor. This type of lighting is more efficient than incandescent lights though.
