Types of Texas Energy Plan Options

May 20th, 2025 By Casey Thornton | Fact Checked By EO Test Reviewer

Electricity is something that most Texans take for granted. It’s there when you need it, but sometimes the bill comes in and it feels like a punch to the gut. Shopping around for electricity can seem overwhelming with all of the different plans out there. How do you know which one will save you money? And how do you choose if they’re even worth comparing? Fortunately, Energy Outlet is here to help! We’ll break down each type of plan so that choosing one won’t feel like such an impossible task anymore!

Fixed-Rate Plans

Price will remain steady for the term of your contract, which is typically either 6 or 12 months. At the end of that time, you’ll be subject to market rates again with one caveat: if rates have dropped, you’ll receive the lower rate when your contract ends! If rates have risen, then you’ll still get to lock in at the lower rate by renewing with the same company. This is not always a bad plan because most Texans don’t know what their electricity usage patterns will look like in a year and if they’ve kept it about the same (which they most likely haven’t), prices may not rise so high as to make this option unattractive.

Variable-Rate Plans

As the name implies, this plan’s price varies with market conditions. You’ll pay a lower rate than standard market rates during what energy companies consider “off-peak” times. But during traditional peak usage times like hot summer days when everyone has their A/C on full blast, you can expect to see an increase in your electric bill. If you’re okay with that risk and don’t mind paying more when it comes around, then this is probably the best plan for you!

Green Energy Plans

In choosing a green energy plan, you may pay a bit more each month, but you’ll know that you’re helping the environment by using clean energy from wind farms and solar plants. Plus, some providers offer incentives for those who want to go green even further by adding in things like a car charging station or a home efficiency assessment. Just ask your provider what they have to offer!

At EnergyOutlet.com, we make shopping for electricity plans simple, transparent, and stress-free! We partner with retail electricity providers (REPs) and may earn commissions when users sign up for plans directly through us. These commissions never impact how plans are ranked.

Our listings are based on electricity rates and plan details—not compensation—so you get fair and unbiased comparisons. You can also sort and filter plans by contract length, rate type, provider, and more to find the best option for your needs!

We work hard to keep everything accurate and up to date, but plan details may sometimes differ from what’s listed on a provider’s website. Rates and terms change frequently, so we always recommend verifying the latest pricing and conditions directly with the provider before enrolling.

All our content—whether reviews, comparisons, or educational guides—is created independently by our team to provide honest, unbiased information.
